DR. JOHN'S CASE NOTES.........................................................................................
There are many disorders and afflictions that give real cause for concern to the medical establishment.Thankfully, there are others which have no serious implications, and are often easily easily treated. However, there is one disorder that seems to affect more bridge players than all the others put together. In itself it is quite harmless, because in essence it turns bridge players into harmless competitors. The name given to this highly prevalent affliction is : RIGI-DAEMIA ROBOTICA. Other psycho-analysts tend to use the alternative labels of WOODENITIS or FLAIRINABSENTIA. All victims display the same tragic characteristics. They behave in a repetitive and routine manner in every aspect of bidding and card play. Like automatons, the victims are compelled to act as though they are following pre-programmed instructions. They always lead their 4th highest against a no trump contract, and they only bid 1NT when holding a very flat hand, 12-14 points. They never choose to depart from these old teachings on bridge, even when the situation cries out for a little flair and imagination. This condition certainly affects those with high anxiety levels, who tend to throw "wobblies" if asked to do something different or unusual. However, treatment is possible for nearly all of the milder cases. Their anxiety levels can be reduced through relaxation programmes, followed up by courses aimed to develop their self-confidence and assertiveness.......which also include several compulsory lessons on creative bidding and play.
