DR. JOHN'S CASE NOTES : DESTRUCTUS SELF-INFLICTA.... This rather disturbing condition is renowned for its devastating effect on both the sufferers and their respective partners. While it persists, the victims potential to improve at the game becomes seriously undermined. Moreover, in extreme cases, victims become prone to suicidal tendencies and self abuse....................unless, of course, their unforgiving partners have got to them first. The symptoms only manifest themselves at the bridge table, after the bidding and/or play of the cards has manoeuvred them into a successful position. For it is at this critical point that victims inexplicably and unerringly make one more fateful bid, or the play of a card that defies all logic and reason. The consequences of these fleeting moments of madness turn galactic tops into abject bottoms. Huge winning plus scores are inevitably replaced by rather embarrassing minuses. This compulsion for a victim to shot himself in the foot......to undo and ruin all the earlier good work......possibly reflects behavioral traits such as complacency, panic or misplaced kindness towards their opponents. However, treatment is available in the form of lessons taken from Howard Bigot-Johnson's infamous best selling books " Bait Your Opponents And Never Let them Off The Hook " and "Shoot To Kill".
